My Husband is a Fixer: Wisdom is in the Community

My husband is a fixer.

No, not the Sopranos kind of fixer.

He's the kind of guy who solves any problem you have that you did not need help solving. You know, like yesterday when we were checking in by phone at the end of the day. I was cleaning off massive amounts of bird poop off my car. Just as I was about to wipe off the last bit and telling him about my day and the even more packed day that was coming, he offered his sage advice to “Pull the car out of the garage and hose it down.” Probably a good strategy, but not what I wanted to hear at that moment.

He can't help it he is constantly telling me. He just has to offer his advice. This guy reminds me a lot of my guy. Watch it if you need a laugh or are in the middle of a home improvement project.

And my oh my, he hates silence. He must fill in every pause.

Can you relate?

The truth is, most times, we know what we need. We know what we need to do. Communities are like that too.

Last week I spent time in two rural areas of Georgia. When I come into communities, I come as a friend and thought partner. I have expertise, yes, but I don't come in as the "expert" and I don't try and fix them.

Communities have all the wisdom they need.

That is the nugget I shared when I was a presenter at the Arizona Evaluation Network Conference recently. The wisdom is in the community.

Sometimes progress is slower than we would like but there is always progress. Wisdom always reveals itself.

Hope you have a great week.

Take care-

Ann
