What is bringing you joy right now?
Choosing Joy: My Word of the Year
As I’ve mentioned in past posts, I stopped making New Year’s resolutions a long time ago. They always felt too rigid, too all‑or‑nothing. Instead—thanks to inspiration from my yoga teacher—I choose a word of the year.
In recent years, my words have been things like focus or intention. This year, though, I’m choosing something different. Something lighter. Something I want more of in every part of my life.
My word for the year is joy.
Seeking Joy in Everyday Life
On the personal side, I plan to keep exploring new places, especially our beautiful National Parks. I just returned from a quick trip to Saguaro National Park with my middle son. He’s getting married in a few weeks, and it was likely our last trip with just the two of us. I soaked up every bit of fresh air, sunshine, and laughter.
I also want to start working through the mountain of recipes tucked away in my Pinterest and Instagram folders, join a book club, and host more dinner parties with friends. (Because food + stories + people = instant joy.)
Joy in My Professional Work
Professionally, I’m diving into a new book project with my work‑wife, Susan Wolfe. We’re writing a guide for coalition leaders—something practical, inspiring, and designed to help communities bring their big dreams to life. We plan to self‑publish, and I’m genuinely excited about it.
I’ll also keep focusing on the parts of my work that feel like home: community coalitions and group facilitation. Being out in communities, supporting people who are making a difference—that’s where I’m happiest.
A Question I Keep Asking
Lately, I’ve been asking several of my podcast guests a simple but meaningful question: “What is bringing you joy?”
It always sparks the best conversations.
So now I’m asking you, friend: What is bringing you joy?
Take care,
Ann
