Feeling Thankful

A few weeks ago I, along with many of my choir friends, said good-bye to another friend. Although I had last seen my friend Carmen fairly recently, I did not know she was sick. Her diagnosis and illness came so fast and she was gone in mere weeks. Her breast cancer, first diagnosed just a few years ago, came roaring back with a vengeance in the form of aggressive bone cancer.

Carmen was a fireball of life and energy and pure love. She was witty and fun and opinionated. I mean opinionated in the nicest of ways. NOT in the way people sometimes talk about women. I mean she was thoughtful. She had an opinion about important things and did not beat herself up when she shared her thoughts. In that way and many others, she was the kind of woman I would like to be, but am not.

So walking into her service, I felt profoundly thankful for her and that I was gifted to know her. I am thankful for each one of my children and marvel at their gifts. I am thankful for my husband of 30+ years who loves me even when I am unlovable. I am thankful for the friends I have known forever and those who have drifted in and out of my life. I am thankful for a faith that sustains me. I am eternally thankful I have a career that I love and clients who have blessed me with the opportunity to serve. I am thankful for a business, now 10 years old, which has allowed me to be a mom and a professional. Each breath, each moment, is pure gift. Enjoy the journey and be thankful.
